We are extremely proud of our Toowoomba North State School curriculum program. North was one of only many schools in the state who received a working for an 'Outstanding' rating on the Teaching and learning audit in 2013. We view the curriculum as the sum of the classroom and school experiences enjoyed by students at our school.

Core curriculum

Our Toowoomba North State School curriculum program is the sum of the learning experiences students receive from the school, both in and outside of the classroom. To meet systemic requirements, our North Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Plan is based on the P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (2013).

North’s established vision statement ‘Nothing but the best’ and our three principles of school values are incorporated into the enacted curriculum to position North children to be life-long learners, with the skills and attributes we value now and in the future.

The school-wide values are:

  • Be safe
  • Be respectful
  • Be a learner

Subjects

Teaching and learning at Toowoomba North State School incorporates:

  • English (a minimum of seven hours instruction per week, with an expected ten hours in prep to year five).
  • Mathematics (a minimum of five hours instruction per week).
  • Science (a minimum of one hour instruction per week in prep to year 2, 1.75 hours in years 3,4,5 and 6, and 2.5 hours a week in year 7).
  • History (a minimum of half in hour in prep to year 2, 1 hour in years 3 to 6 and 1.25 hours in year 7).
  • Geography from 2014 (a minimum of half an hour in prep to year 2, 1 hour in years 3 to 6 and 1.25 hours in year 7).

These subjects are treated as discrete, focused key learning areas and are taught according to the Australian National Curriculum using the Queensland Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) materials as a base.

We support these areas with an integrated approach to other subject areas.  Integrated units of work driven by the key learning area of studies of society and the environment and supported by the remaining subjects of the arts, technology and health are a feature of every classroom program of instruction at North. Specialist lessons are taught by specialist staff in music, Language other than English (LOTE) (year five and six only) and physical education.
